Tiger Habitats

There are five sub-species of tiger left in the world. Three sub-species (Bali, Javan and Caspian) became extinct 20 years ago.

Country Approx Numbers Tiger Species
India   1200-1500   Bengal
Russia   350 - 450   Siberian
Vietnam, Thailand   800 - 1000   Indo-Chinese
Sumatra   400 - 500   Sumatran
China   10 - 15   South China

Tigers live in the forests. They also like long grass that is high in the winter season and gives good camouflage for themselves and their cubs.

Tigers live to the age of 14-16 years in the wild. The Tigress will bring up the cubs for 2 years and they will then go their separate ways, the male tiger having little if any interaction with the family. They live on meat, mainly chital deer, wild boar and samba deer. They have also been known to catch langur monkeys.

A tiger's eyesight is 6 times more acute than humans and is especially useful at night when hunting. Tigers grow to a length of 3 metres including the tail which is a metre long. They grow to a height of 3 feet at the shoulder, the male tiger being larger than the tigress.

A female will have a range of 10-15kms, which she will scent mark, teach her cubs hunting skills, also lessons that they need to learn that they will use later in life on their own territories. The male tiger will have a larger range and may have more than one tigress in his range area.
